Slight undercount for the first time since 1990.
The U.S. Census Bureau reports that 99.98% of addresses and housing units nationwide were accounted for by the close of the collection of data on October 15.
“The 2020 Census faced challenges like no other decennial census in living memory,” said Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross. “Achieving these metrics in the face of severe weather events and a global pandemic is a testament to the determination and ingenuity of the hundreds of thousands of dedicated women and men who worked on the 2020 Census.”
In addition to the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, all but one state had reporting results over 99.9%. The census counts in 2010 and 2000 reported overcounts of .01% and .49%, respectively. The 1990 census had an undercount of 1.61%.
Some statisticians and civil rights groups have voiced concerns over the .1% who were not included in the numbers: Native Americans on reservations missed due to the pandemic lockdown, and residents of hurricane-ridden Louisiana.
